Abstract |
The 2023/24 SBR is the first harmonized census conducted by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), Tanzania Mainland and Office of the Chief Government Statistician (OCGS) Tanzania Zanzibar. The main objective of the SBR census if to provide sampling frame for all establishment based censuses and surveys. Previous censuses were conducted separately for Tanzania Mainland and Tanzania Zanzibar.
This report presents findings based on visited establishments. The Census of Business Register (SBR) was a complete enumeration of all operating economic units with a fixed location in the country, irrespective of the number of employees. Census results indicates that, a total of 219,371 establishments were enumerated in Tanzania; 179,196 establishments inTanzania Mainland and 40,175 in Tanzania Zanzibar.
The distribution of establishments by region reveals that, the majority of establishments are located in Dar es Salaam Region (25,935 establishments; 11.8%), followed by Mjini Magharibi (22,711; 10.4%), Geita (9,739; 4.4%), Mwanza (9,524; 4.3%), Mbeya (8,555; 3.9%) and Dodoma (8,098; 3.7%). The remaining regions has less than 3.6 percent of the enumerated establishments each.
Wholesale and retail trade, repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles have the largest number of establishments accounting for 55.1 percent of all establishments, followed by Accommodation and food service activities (9.3%), Manufacturing (8.0%), Other service activities (7.5%) and Education (5.9%). The remaining activities has less than five percent each.
More than eighty four percent (84.3%) are owned by Private Profit-Making Institutions, 7.6 percent are owned by Government Institutions and 3.9 percent are owned by Private Non-Profit Making Institutions. Very few establishments are owned by Parastatals (1.8%), Cooperatives (1.5%) and Joint Venture (0.9%). Amongst establishments owned by Government institutions, education as an economic activity, accounts for the highest percentage (44.0%) of establishments, followed by public administration and defence compulsory social security (34.2%) and human health and social work activities (12.7%).
The distribution of establishments by size group reveals that 78.1 percent of establishment have 1-4 workers..
Most establishments, 91.8 percent are stand-alone eestablishments or enterprises or organizations without branches. stand alone establishment is an independent establishment that does not have branches or is not associated with any other establishment. About five percent are branches of establishments of large organizations and about three percent are Headquarters of establishments with more than one branch.
Out of 219,339 enumerated establishments in Tanzania, 78.1 percent are registered, 16.0 percent are not registered and 5.8 percent are mostly Government offices hence do not need registration.
In Tanzania Mainland, out of 179,196 enumerated establishments, 77.5 percent are registered, 16.0 percent are not registered and 6.5 percent are mostly Government offices that do not need registration, whereas in Tanzania Zanzibar, out of 40,175 enumerated establishments, 80.9 percent are registered, 15.7 percent are not registered and 3.4 percent mostly Government offices hence do not need registration.
The number of persons engaged (Employees) for mostl economic activities reveal that, there were more males than females counterpart, with exception of Accommodation and food services (males 42.9% and females 57.1%) and Human health and social work activities (males 44.9% and females 55.1%). |
