    Abstract

    The 2015 Annual Survey of Industrial Production covered a total of 2,389 establishments which engaged ten or more (10+) persons/workers. Out of the total establishments, manufacturing sub-sector had the largest number of (1,864 or 78.0 percent) ; followed by mining and quarrying (384 or 16.1 percent); water supply, sewerage, waste management and remediation activities (110 or 4.6 percent); and electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning supply with 31 establishments or 1.3 percent. Regional wise, Dar es Salaam had the highest number of establishments (535 or 22.4 percent); followed by Manyara (352 or 14.7 percent) and Morogoro (239 or 10.0 percent). Out of 2,389 establishments, 2,101 (87.9 percent) were owned by nationals; 199 (8.3 percent) by foreigners; and 89 (3.7 percent) were jointly owned. Most of the establishments, 2,179 (91.2 percent) were privately owned; followed by public ownership 184 (7.7 percent); and only 26 (1.1 percent) had a mixed ownership.

    The total number of persons engaged within the four industrial sub-sectors was 201,352. However, majority of the workers (156,579 or 77.8 percent) were in the Manufacturing sub-sector. Gender wise, out of the total number of persons engaged, 149,814 (74.4 percent) were males; and 51,538 (25.6 percent) were females. Regional wise, Dar es Salaam had the largest number of workers (51,664 or 25.7 percent); followed by Morogoro (23,978 or 11.3 percent); Manyara (20,716 or 10.3 percent); Arusha (13,576 or 6.7 percent); Kilimanjaro (11,557 or 5.7 percent); Mwanza (8,761 or 4.4 percent); and Shinyanga with 8,118 workers or 4.0 percent. The total labour costs was TZS 1,593,948 million, of which wages and salaries accounted for the largest amount (TZS 1,012,995 million or 63.6 percent). The results also show that from the total labour cost, manufacturing sub-sector had the largest amount of TZS 982,563 million or 61.6 percent of the total labour costs; followed by Mining and quarrying with TZS 448,770 million or 28.2 percent.

    The Gross Output of goods and services produced amounted to TZS 19,894,060 million, of which; Manufacturing sub-sector contributed TZS 12,564,497 million or 63.2 percent of the total Gross Output; followed by Mining and quarrying with TZS 3,687,602 million or 18.5 percent. The remaining two sub-sectors contributed a total of 18.3 percent. Majority of the goods produced were sold locally (TZS 14,342,109 million or 72.1 percent); while TZS 4,818,680 million or 24.2 percent were exported. Total cost of production (Intermediate Consumption) was TZS 10,226,485 million; of which, TZS 3,219,836 million or 31.5 percent was used in electricity. The industrial and non-industrial services consumed a total of TZS 1,248,344 million or 12.2 percent of the total production cost. Analysis of Value Added by industrial sub-sector shows that, total value added produced were TZS.9,667,575 million of which TZS. 5,575,510 million or 57.7 percent was produced by manufacturing sub-sector; followed by mining and quarrying with TZS 2,787,932 million or 28.8 percent while the remaining two industrial sub-sector produced a total of value added amounted to TZS 1,304,133 million or 13.5 percent.

    It included establishments that were active in 2015 and engaged in any of the following activities; Mining and quarrying, manufacturing, electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning supply, and water supply, sewerage, waste management and remediation activities

    Questionnaires

    The questionnaires conformed to the International Recommendations for Industrial Statistics of the United Nations and incorporated the stakeholders' requirements. The questionnaires were designed to ensure that, the information to be collected satisfied the needs of national accounts, the government, researchers and the business community.     Supervision

    The role of the supervisor was to coordinator field data collection activities, including management of the field teams, supplies and equipment, finances, maps and listings, coordinate with local authorities concerning the survey plan and make arrangements for accommodation and travel. Additionally, the field supervisor assigned the work to the interviewers, spot checked work, maintained field control documents, and sent completed questionnaires and progress reports to the central office.
